CANADA'S COOLEST CHARITIES... coming soon!

The work of Canada’s charities is often underappreciated and misunderstood. Few Canadians have been exposed to the dynamism, innovation and commitment that the country’s 85,000 charities exhibit every day as they work to make our communities better places to live. For most Canadians, their knowledge of the charitable world often starts and stops at workplace fundraising campaigns, mailings from hospital lotteries or national organizations – or the occasional charitable scandal that graces the front pages of the newspaper.

Mendicant Group wants to change that. We want to throw a spotlight on some of the really neat stuff that Canadian charities are doing and help them get the recognition they deserve.

What makes a charity “cool”?

It’s not about style. It’s about substance and the power to move and inspire people.

It’s about that visceral reaction that someone has when you explain what a specific charity does. The person pauses for a minute – and if it does really neat stuff – he/she says “wow-that’s cool!”

Our jury has a bunch of criteria, of course, that are more specific. Is the organization taking an innovative approach to its mission? Does it raise funds in a unique way? Does it engage volunteers and donors that other charities don’t?

Taken together, this type of work that produces a visceral reaction – “Wow, that’s cool!”
